Royal Musselburgh is the sixth oldest golf club in the world, founded in 1774, and it wears its history well. The clubhouse alone is worth the visit: Prestongrange House, a grand historic building that once belonged to the monks of Newbattle Abbey, now overlooking a James Braid parkland course laid out close to the Forth shore.
The course runs to 6,237 yards, a manageable and enjoyable test rather than a brute, which makes it one of the better choices in the county for mixed-ability groups. The club leans into its informal atmosphere, from the relaxed dress code to golf day packages built around proper meals in the clubhouse. The Telegraph once named it the most venerable golf course in Scotland in a search for the country's most characterful clubs, and between the setting, the history and the welcome, it is hard to argue.
Visitors are welcome seven days a week with online tee booking. Golf day and society packages run from morning roll and coffee through to a full three-course meal, and the pro shop hires buggies, trolleys and clubs with advance notice. The clubhouse serves food all day from an 8:00 opening. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor beer garden, and the on-course dog policy is available from the office when booking.
Royal Musselburgh keeps things deliberately informal. Smart casual dress may be worn at all times, and jeans and trainers are fine in the clubhouse, though not on the course itself. The club encourages soft spikes in the summer months to protect its bent grass greens. One tradition worth knowing: mobile phones may only be used in the car park and locker room.
Midweek round £110, weekend £130. Twilight from £50. Under 18s from £25. Prices may vary with availability.
Prices checked July 2026 and may change; confirm with the club when booking.
