Gladsmuir Parish Church, Gladsmuir

String sextet concert featuring Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht and Brahms's String Sextet No 1.
Brahms and Schoenberg Sextets: performed by Consone Quartet, Francesca Gilbert (Violin), Alexander Rolton (Cello) playing Schoenberg; Verklärte Nacht; Brahms; String Sextet No 1 in B flat major Op 18 at Gladsmuir Church, Gladsmuir on Sat 19 Sept 11am as part of the Lammermuir Festival. Schoenberg's Transfigured Night, scored for rich-textured string sextet, is now his most popular work. Composed in 1899, it is both a deeply moving product of late, post-Wagner Romanticism and a prophetic signpost to the 20th century ahead. In contrast to Schoenberg's nocturnal melancholy, Brahms's youthful B flat Sextet is mainly a work of sunny optimism flowing freely with songful melody.
