Piano concertos by Mozart and Janácek wind sextet performed by Royal Northern Sinfonia.
Opening Concert Jeremy Denk Plays Mozart Piano Concertos I: performed by Royal Northern Sinfonia, Jeremy Denk (Piano), Maria Wloszczowska (Director) playing Mozart: Piano Concerto No 9; in E flat major K271 ‘Jeunehomme’; Janácek: Mládí; Mozart: Piano Concerto No 14; in E flat major K449 at St Mary's Kirk, Haddington on Tue 8 Sept 7.30pm as part of the Lammermuir Festival. The great music historian Alfred Einstein was in no doubt: the piano concerto was Mozart’s ‘own, highly personal creation... it was only in the piano concertos that Mozart achieved his ideal.’ He composed twenty three of them throughout his short life from the age of 11, consistently plumbing a depth of emotional and dramatic insight comparable to that of his mature operas. In three concerts the great American pianist Jeremy Denk returns to the Festival to renew his brilliant partnership with violinist Maria Wloszczowska, directing the Royal Northern Sinfonia, for an exploration of six of these wonderful masterpieces. They begin with two of Mozart’s most innovative concertos, offset by the invigorating, outdoors energy of Janácek’s wind sextet Mládí (Youth), a nostalgic homage to his early life, composed around his 70th birthday.
